The Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club has been around for years, training people of all ages to become qualified Australian life savers. Today the teenage students studying at Global Village Noosa had the opportunity to learn more about surf safety with local life savers Greg and Ian.
Greg started the session with a very informative presentation on safety at the beach. The students learnt that there were three types of waves, they are:
-
plunging (dumping) wave
-
spilling wave
-
surging wave
He mentioned that rips, plunging waves, currents, sting rays, blue bottles, stonefish, sea urchins, sharks, box jelly fish and blue ringed octopus were all potential hazards to watch out for when swimming and enjoying fun at the beach.
Afterwards the students were asked to carry a board down to the water’s edge where they would be shown paddling techniques. To warm up, Greg took them for a short jog up and down the beach.
The students were given a relay task which involved two teams competing against each other. Each member of the two teams, had to paddle out, one by one to Greg, who was waiting 100 metres out, paddle around him and then paddle back in and tag the next paddle border. The first team to finish on shore, won!
Everyone had a lot of fun even if they chose to hang out on the beach in the sand.
See you tomorrow for some more surf fun! Happy Days!
